(Magazine - 1977-1981 - A sustained stream of brilliance)
I heard last year that Magazine have gotten together for a reunion of sorts. At a period of time when a lot of bands are re-thinking their "broken up" status, it's nice some favorites are coming back to the spotlight. Magazine were certainly an influential band. Former Buzzocks front man Howard DeVoto formed Magazine as a way of branching out from the relative confinements of the Punk movement, and in doing so ushered in a new genre and many imitators. New Wave took on a certain degree of pretentiousness in places, but not in Magazine's case - they were original and they maintained their healthy disdain for convention which has served them well over the years. They are a band that have aged well and their reunion is looked at with more continuation of the spirit than a nod to nostalgia. And for that, life is good.
This track is off The Correct Use Of Soap from 1980. Their worldwide signature song "About The Weather" would come later, but this track, Philadelphia, had all the earmarks that made them the seminal band they were from the start.
I suspect you may not have heard it in a long time. It works wonders.
