A dive into 1970's Pub-Rock this weekend with Brinsley Schwarz playing live at The Top Rank in Cardiff on June 19, 1974.

Though not very well known as a genre here in the U.S., Pub-Rock was huge in England in the early 1970's. It was a genial mixture of country-rock, soul, and roots-rock, presented in an unpretentious stripped down manner (accommodating the close quarters of a pub with usually a very cramped stage) that catered to an audience who wanted good music but didn't want to go to an arena to hear it.

A very healthy scene flourished from around 1969 to the early 80's and a number of bands and musicians came out of that scene, most notably Nick Lowe, who was a founding member of Brinsley Schwarz who went on to establish a major solo career and lend his considerable talents to the burgeoning Punk scene.

The concert tonight is typical of a Brinsley's set and the sound is excellent. Here's the set list:
