Is your state voting today? How were the lines, the ballots, the atomosphere?
If you think today isn't a big deal, be aware: One out of five house seats is in a primary TODAY.
We'll be updating this post as results come in.
Open thread for primary news below...
Update 1: AP has called the New Jersey Senate Primary for Robert Menendez. This would usually go without saying, but he had an unexpectedly strong challenge from a relative unknown -- publisher Lisa McCormick.
GOP Alabama Rep. Martha Roby may not get to 50% to win her primary outright, which means she will face a runoff against one of her challengers -- either Roy Moore supporter Barry Moore or former Democrat Bobby Bright.
Update 2: No new definitive results yet but this happened in California. WTF.
Update 3:
In New Mexico:
Michelle Lujan Grisham has won the Democratic primary for governor, setting up a November showdown with Steve Pearce.
The Democratic primary for the 2nd Congressional District has been called for Xochitl Torres Small.
In Alabama:
Incumbent Martha Roby forced into a runoff against former Democrat Bobby Bright
UPDATE 4:
In California, polls are now closed and results should be coming shortly.
In Iowa:
Fred Hubbell has won the Democratic primary for governor, setting up a November showdown with incumbent Kim Reynolds.
Abby Finkenauer is leading by 59 points in the Democratic primary for the 1st Congressional District, with 18.0 percent of precincts reporting. This is a district Obama won, and a prime Dem target for November.
UPDATE 5:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein has been declared the winner of the CA Senate primary. It is still up in the air as to whether she will square off against a Republican or fellow Democrat Kevin DeLeon.
UPDATE 6:
There will be a Democrat running in Darrell Issa's district in November. Rohrabacher's is not as certain.
In the governor's race, Gavin Newsom is definitely the top candidate. Right now, the closest candidate to him is John Cox, the Republican.
UPDATE 7:
This one is a personal point of privilege, because it's my district and I'm loving this outcome:
ALSO, BIG New Mexico victory!
UPDATE 8:
Putin's favorite district has a bit of a problem right now. There is the possibility of a tabulation error that is not explained by demographics or precincts.
BIG UPDATE 9:
FINAL UPDATE:
There are still a LOT of ballots to count in CA. Less than 30% of LA's vote has been tabulated and reported. There is still a 2000 vote error against Harley Rouda in CA-48.
However, there are some things that have happened. Judge Persky -- the judge that gave such a light sentence to the Stanford rapist -- was recalled by a firm margin.
It looks like CA-48 will be Rohrabacher vs. either Harley Rouda (hoping) or Hans Kierstad.
Antonio Villaraigosa conceded the primary, which means Gavin Newsom will face carpetbagger Republican John Cox in the general. And it's looking more and more like Kevin DeLeon will be DiFi's opponent for the Senate race, locking out Republicans.
Finally, in strong, Iowa, you may remember this guy:
He won his primary. Onward.
We'll round up the highlights for you tomorrow in a separate post. Thanks for hanging out with us tonight.
Signing off at midnight,
Karoli
