(Wire - when 154 was released in 1979 it was a milestone and a swan song to an era)
Wire started off like a lot of bands around London during the mid-1970's. Strictly Punk at first but slowly evolving into something a lot more. With each subsequent album, Wire explored new areas and developed their sound until 154 was released in 1979. It was their last album for EMI Harvest and in many ways their greatest, proving influential for countless musicians in later years. The expansiveness of their sound and the depth of their lyrics has maintained its fresh vitality over thirty years later.
Well, don't take my word for it. Tonight's cut is off 154. A Touching Display wasn't issued as a single, but it's been a song I've played hundreds of times over the years.
It still stops me dead in my tracks.
