The first week of January 1950 ended on a curious note. Great Britain dropped a diplomatic bomb by recognizing The Peoples Republic Of China, leaving the U.S. in a somewhat awkward position. It was deemed unlikely the U.S. would follow suit at any time in the future (a good twenty years). It was also the opening of the 82nd Congress and President Truman delivered a spirited message to Congress and got an equally spirited reception in return. The White House was undergoing serious renovation, the first time in many many years. 1950 was looking hopeful in January. However, it was a long way off to December and a lot would transpire in those twelve months along the way.
