You can never tell with Fox & Friends host Rachel Campos-Duffy where the stupidity ends and the malicious dishonesty begins. But both seemed on hand when she deployed all her indignation over the so-far lack of charges against Hunter Biden, the former addict with no role in his father’s administration.
Never mind that Donald Trump, Campos-Duffy's hero, is committing crimes in plain sight and he, along with not one but three of his adult children are being sued for fraud by the attorney general of New York.
But Hunter Biden aroused every bit of indignation Campos-Duffy could muster for the cameras.
“Here his Dad is, trying to take away people’s guns rights,” Campos-Duffy lied, “and then Hunter’s gonna defend himself, you know, by, you know, using the Second Amendment and exerting his rights as an American to have a gun.”
Yes, it may be a tad odd if Hunter Biden uses the Second Amendment to defend his purchase of a gun while he was a drug abuser, but a) it’s not as though Joe Biden is Hunter’s defense lawyer; b) the so-called crime happened in 2018; c) Hunter Biden never shot anyone or used it to commit a crime, as far as we know; and d) most importantly, Joe Biden is not looking to “take away people’s gun rights” as Campos-Duffy suggested, but he’s looking to strengthen some gun laws to keep our children and others from getting regularly massacred.
This desperate attempt to smear Biden with his son’s eight-year-old minor crime (while Trump looks ever more treasonous) was a recurring theme on Saturday’s Fox & Friends. We saw a clip of contributor Gregg Jarrett who had more or less said the same thing earlier in the show: “The irony should be lost on no one. Here is a president who wants to restrict weapons and his son wants to loosen the laws by taking advantage of the Second Amendment as his defense to a potential gun unlawful weapons charge.”
“Even if he is able to avoid the unlawful possession charge, that doesn't absolve him from lying on a federal form which can get you up to five years behind bars,” Jarrett added.
That led to the second part of the poutrage: the unfairness to the poor, jailed Jan. 6 insurrectionists.
“Gregg brought up this is minor compared to other things and it's been five years or more that they've been investigating Hunter Biden,” Campos-Duffy griped. “You look at January 6, you know, protesters, many of them charged and had the book thrown at them. They’re already languishing in jail for sentences. And Hunter Biden, still running around.
There is no comparison between the non-violent Hunter Biden and insurrectionists caught on video trying to violently overturn a democratic election, shouting that they wanted to lynch the vice president, and who were convicted either by a jury or having pleaded guilty.
But we know why Fox News wants to pretend otherwise.
