You may recall that last summer, Kansans voted overwhelmingly to keep abortion protections in their state constitution. But none of that seems to matter to at least some Kansas Republicans.
Kansas state Senator Chase Blasi introduced a bill last week to allow cities and counties to ban abortion, claiming he was taking the issue to “a more local level,” The New Republic reported. He's not the only one still determined to force women to give birth against their will. State Senator Mark Steffen introduced a bill that would ban telemedicine prescriptions of abortion drugs.
Neither bill is likely to become law, TNR notes. Kansas’ Democratic governor, Laura Kelly, supports abortion rights and will almost certainly veto the bills. There would also probably be court challenges.
But it’s a perfect example of Republicans putting extremist ideology over democracy and even the rule of law.
