Today is the annual hardcore right wing forced-birth march in Washington, D.C., otherwise known as the Walk for Life. It's the day where women across the country are informed that their lives matter little, because we are to love the fetus and starve the child. If a mother or two dies from a life-threatening medical condition past her 20th week of pregnancy, then let it be so.

House Republicans had planned to present these walkers with a shiny symbolic bill expressing their support for a ban on all abortions past 20 weeks. The bill had some nice extras in it, like women having to report their rape to police in order to meet an exception to the ban.

Republican Congresswomen, it turns out, didn't much care for it.

The legislation was set for a vote this week but Ellmers and Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) raised objections Tuesday over the bill, which bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Both of them removed their names from the bill as co-sponsors.

The legislation also contains language that would require rape victims to report having been sexually assaulted to authorities before seeking an abortion. The objections by Walorski and Ellmers sparked confusion among Republicans and caused House Republican leadership to consider ways to tweak the bill.

Democrats also got into the fight with Democratic National Committee chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) calling the language of the bill "absolutely unacceptable." The White House threatened to veto the legislation as well.

Even though Ellmers said she'd vote for the bill despite her objections, Majority Whip Steve Scalise was not whipping votes for it, and ultimately they pulled it. Reports indicate they will instead vote on another purely symbolic bill affirming existing law prohibiting federal funds from being used to pay for abortions.

This is how they govern now. Whatever wedge issue has a "walk" in the nation's capitol gets a symbolic nod. Just wait until the Walk for Open Carry.
