When President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stood before Congress earlier this week and assured us that Ukraine was not only alive and kicking, but standing firm against the tyranny Russian president Vladimir Putin wanted to impose on his country, he showed himself to be one of the greatest leaders this world has seen in a very long time.
And make no mistake, that was meant to put recalcitrant and stubborn Republicans on notice that this country stands with the country fighting for freedom, not tyranny.
AP:
Zelenskyy called the tens of billions of dollars in U.S. military and economic assistance provided over the past year vital to Ukraine’s efforts to beat back Russia and appealed for even more in the future.
“Your money is not charity,” he sought to reassure both those in the room and those watching at home. “It’s an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way.”
Just before his arrival, the U.S. announced a new $1.8 billion military aid package, including for the first time Patriot surface-to-air missiles. And Congress planned to vote this week on a fresh spending package that includes about $45 billion in additional emergency assistance to Ukraine.
That didn't stop some Republicans from showing their dislike for those who stand up to tyrants. Freedom fighters and anti-tyranny champions Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz attended, but didn't stand for any ovations.
Other senators chose not to attend for weird reasons. Here is Kansas Senator Roger Marshall (R-Koch) explaining that attending the speech would have been rude to the Border Patrol.
Here is Missouri senator Josh Hawley (R-Insurrectionist) explaining that he didn't want to be part of the photo op. Alrighty then. When is any Senator camera shy? He certainly wasn't on January 6th.
But I digress. The hero here is the President of Ukraine, who is leading his country and has steeled their resolve to shake off the shackles of their nasty neighbor, Russia.
Here is his full speech to Congress.
And so we award President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a Good Guy Crookie, and wish him a rapid victory on the battlefield and a prosperous future for his country.
