These people are giving me a headache, but Bryan Fischer is at least partly right about this claim.
"You may think that I am exaggerating, that I am hyperbolizing," Fischer declared, "I assure you, ladies and gentlemen, that I am not, that this is the direction that we are headed ... It is, before long, going to become illegal for Christians to hold public office."
"The day is coming when it will be against the law for Christians to hold public office," he continued. "It will be against the law for Christians to even run for public office [and Christians] will not be allowed to serve in any kind of appointed capacity in government."
He's only right about that to the extent that Christians will be held to the same standard as any other public employee, which means they will have to accept the fact that public employment or public office means they can't discriminate. If they want to hire staff, they can't refuse to hire a gay staffer.
Because that's how government works. We don't discriminate in the government. The state does not enjoy the same luxuries that churches do. So Fischer should make a choice right here and now to understand that this country is not now a theocracy, nor will it ever be.
If he can't handle that, he should just keep doing what he's doing. But don't expect anyone to take him seriously.
My gawd, these people are just unhinged about the possibility of people doing something they don't like. Like loving each other enough to make a public commitment. I haven't seen such hysteria since they tried to integrate schools back in the day.
