I saw Lucky Paul play last night at The Satellite over in Silver Lake and his show was pretty different from those of other electronic artists that I've seen. The set was pretty much entirely improvised and he spent a lot of time building complex polyrhythms. He would do this by playing a percussive instrument (drum kit, shaker, congas, etc.), sampling it, and then looping the patterns over one another, which made for some pretty interesting rhythmic transitions both in terms of time signature and rhythmic feel. He also did a good job of engaging the audience by sampling sounds that the audience members made and incorporating them into his improvisations, which was pretty cool. If you're looking for something unique in the world of electronic music, I recommend checking out Lucky Paul.
