Trip hop was a pretty interesting movement considering how it changed the practice of sampling, and if you're talking about trip hop, you can't leave Portishead out of the conversation.

The idea behind trip hop is quite intriguing. Basically, instead of sampling other peoples' music and creating soundscapes around that, you write your own music and sample yourself. People still do this and it yields some pretty interesting results, especially in that it allows artists to hear themselves in a totally different light. Portishead was pretty much at the forefront of this movement, so, as an example, why not use one of their songs?
