The Dallas Cowboys signed Michael Sam to their practice squad Wednesday which was covered pretty heavily by the media since he's the first openly gay football player and as usual some crank Christian conservatives are none too pleased.
The group American Decency says thousands of right-wing Christians will demonstrate at AT&T Stadium Sunday to protest the Dallas Cowboys signing Michael Sam to its practice squad.
Guess who's leading this group? Go ahead and guess:
Jack Burkman heads the group which claims to have 3.62 million members in 41 states. Burkman says, “We cannot just stand idly by as Christian values and morals are trampled. We will do whatever we can to preserve family values in this country.”
His own brother has called him a fraud and from his past behavior and since we've covered his lame exploits since Bush was in office I'd have to concur completely.
“Jerry Jones has betrayed American values, Christian values, and his own city’s values,” Burkman said. “The people of Dallas – and Christians all across this land – are about to make him pay a huge financial price. The Cowboys are no longer America’s team.”
Fan reaction in Dallas has been mixed, reported KTVT-TV, with some recognizing the team’s defense needs all the help it can get, but others are uncomfortable rooting for a gay player.
“I don’t want my kids looking up to me and say, ‘Daddy, what does that mean that he’s gay?’” one fan said during a radio call-in show.
The question is, is there really enough outrage being generated by a conman like Burkman (who loves his DC Madam's) that will rile up enough wingnuts to take action against the Cowboys? I seriously doubt it. In fact, even though I predict the Cowboys will suck this year, they will still keep Sam on and by the end of the year he'll be playing for them during the regular season.
