You may remember him as two-time guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, but there's a lot more to his music than his contributions to that band. Don't get me wrong, he did some great stuff in RHCP, but he's always got something new and different up his sleeve whenever he releases a solo project. Take this song for instance, it starts off with a hip hop beat, which sets up the tempo for the wailing guitar riff that comes in. Next thing you know, you're caught between a swarm of synths and a driving melody interspersed with some ass-kicking guitar ornamentation. Everything beyond this point is a rhythmic experiment gone mad. He somehow managed to program some fills in there that sound like they're holding on to the tempo for dear life, which is no easy task even if you had a live drummer who could sense those things. Not to mention the mixing job on this tune, which is pretty unorthodox, but works really well. Whoever panned those drum fills but On top of that, this is only a bonus track from his new album. So, needless to say, I'm pretty excited for the release this April.
