I love Errol Garner’s piano playing. I think it made him very happy. He was a piano player his entire life. He was the master of stride playing, and was able to weave so much intricacy into his tunes, sometimes it’s hard for a non player like me to see which hand is playing which notes and chords. At the end of a Garner rendition, I feel like I’ve listened to 5 tunes, and I mean that in a good way.
While he played, he vocalized with little groans of happiness and self approval. Sometimes it seems like he blows himself away.
He had a worldwide appeal and plays ‘Intro and I Get a Kick Out of You’ on a Belgian television show.
One of his performing practices was to keep his audience in suspense by playing an extended intro that had no hint as to the selection he was about to play. While that’s not the case with the selection from the Brussels television show, Jazzprisma, here’s a short intro that does not give away the eventual destination, in his jumpin’ rendition of ‘Where or When,’ from an Amsterdam performance in 1962. And for good measure, for the train imitation in a boogy style during the intro, I’ll throw in Caravan
