Lily Allen says she's breaking us with us, for real.

Well, I guess. Like a cute, British Lars Ulrich, Allen has been adamant and vocal in the fight against music piracy, and has joined other British artists in support of legislation that would suspend the internet connections of fans that steal music. Today, she went a step further and released a statement saying she's not going to renew her record contract because she doesn't stand to make any money from sales on it.

NME:

"Just so you know, I have not renegotiated my record contract and have no plans to make another record. I do however remain a fan of new music, so this is not some selfish crusade.

"The days of me making money from recording music have been and gone as far as I'm concerned, so I don't (at this point) stand to profit from legislation [from the government regarding file-sharing]. Except future purchases of previously recorded material (which won’t be much)."

Allen's spokesperson said that the singer, who has tour dates booked until mid-December, was not completely stepping away from music. "She is not quitting pop music," he told NME.COM. "She is not thinking about her next album right now because she is still in the middle of promoting her current record."

Is she trying to start a general strike among popular artists to stop making music until the British government does something serious about piracy? If that's not what she's doing, should it be? That seems to be a more reasonable action in the piracy wars than any new copy-protection scheme I've heard.
