I'm sure you're all happy to know that our House of Representatives is set to have a vote on affirming the national motto as "In God We Trust" and making sure it's all memorialized everywhere it can be. Because you know, having a vote like this really just creates more jobs, right?
Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA), the founder and chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, sponsored the legislation. It would encourage the public display of the motto in all public buildings, public schools and government institutions.
Forbes said he introduced the bill in January because he was troubled by a pattern of omitting God from the nation’s heritage.
“Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will have the same opportunity to reaffirm our national motto and directly confront a disturbing trend of inaccuracies and omissions, misunderstandings of church and state, rogue court challenges, and efforts to remove God from the public domain by unelected bureaucrats,” Forbes said.
“As our nation faces challenging times, it is appropriate for Members of Congress and our nation—like our predecessors—to firmly declare our trust in God, believing that it will sustain us for generations to come.”
This vote might not bother me as much as it does if it weren't such an in-your-face slap to every unemployed worker out there who might have a job if the House and the Senate would actually get their act together and vote on the provisions in President Obama's American Jobs Act. But you know, John Boehner doesn't think there needs to be a vote on it, and so is blocking it from coming to the floor, while scheduling wedgy-type votes like this one.
If the goal of the tea party and Republicans is to "drown government in a bathtub," they're certainly succeeding. The problem is, they're drowning everyone else in a sea of poverty while they do it.
Possibly it's intended as a symbolic act, since this motto is best-known for appearing on money. And we all know how much Republicans love money.
