It seems there's a whole army of conservative whackos out there who want to whip the Benghazi non-scandal into something more. If you haven't heard the recording of the Groundswell meeting where General "Jerry" Boykin and Frank Gaffney discussed their midnight meeting with John Boehner and Darrell Issa to lobby for a select committee, you should.
It turns out they're not just a lonely couple of wingnuts out there marching boldly toward a ticket to harass the Obama administration for the next three years. Media Matters reports that another organization is running ads to call for a select committee. This group is headed up by Fox News contributors, who are also using their Fox platform to complement the ad buys by their own organization.
Three Fox News personalities currently sit on the advisory board of Secure America Now, a conservative advocacy group that has called for a select committee to investigate the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Fox News has heavily promoted calls to form a select committee on Benghazi alongside nonstop misinformation about the attacks.
John Bolton, Pat Caddell and Mike Huckabee are all listed as members of the group's advisory board. Bolton and Caddell are Fox News contributors, while Huckabee hosts his own show on the network on weekends.
Secure America Now's president, Allan Roth, said the group would market a new web video "far and wide and continue our campaign to get the Congress to appoint a Select Committee" to investigate the attack.
Roth appeared on Fox host Sean Hannity's radio show on September 11 to promote the video and told him, "I just want to thank you for being one of the rare members of the news media who has dedicated time and the effort to keep the Benghazi story alive."
Someone should really take Roth aside and remind him that the "Benghazi story" is deader than a doornail.
Anyone with half a brain understands that the reason they keep gnawing away at the body of a dead story is to try and obtain a tool they can use to harass the White House and distract everyone from anything meaningful for the next three years. Listen to the recording of the Groundswell folks, where they are all discussing the goal of getting to a select committee so they have subpoena power. No matter who is flogging the story at any given time, their goal is this one thing, and that one thing is intended to arm them with something -- anything -- they can dig up to impeach President Obama.
This is all to be expected from conservatives, but now we have Fox News out there promoting it along with those non-profit groups like Secure America Now and failing to disclose to viewers that their contributors have a leadership role in the organization.
Overall, it's just a little incestuous conservative circle jerk to create scandal where none exists. They just loathe that black dude in the White House that much.
