I know my title is a lot to take in and I loathe to compare any show to BSG because Battlestar Galactica is one of the best sci-fi shows of all time, but Orphan Black is by far the best new sci-fi show to come along since then and I wanted to get your attention. It wasn't offered up by the Syfy channel, (they failed to imagine greater) and instead it was produced by BBC America. As you know I'm a huge Doctor Who fan and I saw the ads they were airing during Who's seventh season. I was intrigued but had no idea what the show was about so I was a little hesitant to jump into it. Well, curiosity got the better of me so I watched the first episode. I wasn't blown away by it, but I gave it one more episode and am I glad I did. I immediately starting tweeting about the show @JohnAmato. The rest of the season was an intense ride of surprising twists and turns and the lead actress Tatiana Maslany, was simply fantastic. (She should win an Emmy, but instead was snubbed by the event.) You'll understand how good she is after a few episodes. I won't give away the story line, but on Sept, 14th at 10 pm est, BBC America is rebroadcasting the entire first season again. (Here's the link for the upcoming schedule)
Orphan Black doesn't have the complexity of BSG, nor is it on a spaceship and shouldn't be compared to it, but what it brings is an original story that kept me guessing the entire season (which is hard to do) and a marvelous cast and writers to back it up.
Netflix has it available to rent and BBC America will have it on VOD. I'm hoping it will be streamed soon. According to Entertainment Weekly, Orphan Black Season 2 will premiere in April 2014. That's a long wait for me so I'll gear up to power cycle season one. You can follow her on twitter too if you dig that sort of thing. @tatianamaslany
Update: Paul Krugman agrees with me:
Hey, if I can post music videos once a week, I guess I can recommend a TV show now and then. Just finished watching our DVR’d Season 1 of Orphan Black, and wow.
