South Carolina's Ex-Governor Mark Sanford is trying to use a 'second chance GOD' to con the people from his district to win an election as a Congressman after having to quit as being Governor because of an illicit love affair.
March 20, 2013

I doubt you have forgotten that as Governor, Mark Appalachian Trail Sanford left South Carolina without telling anyone to have a love tryst in Argentina with his hot gal pal. Usually you find pols will at least lie to their spouses about where they are going, but not Sanford.

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where.

Then, after he was found out, he had to address the media. Remember this bizarre press conference where I originally wrote this?

Is Sanford completely off his rocker? I understand about love, but why is he giving passionate interviews with the AP? And does he think he'll save his marriage by telling them that his lover is his "soul mate?"

His behavior got wackier and wackier and even conservatives were bashing him. He immediately began to play the God card in an effort to save himself from his angry constituents.

It is true that I did wrong and failed at the largest of levels, but equally true is the fact that God can make good of our respective wrongs in life. In this vein, while none of us has the chance to attend our own funeral, in many ways I feel like I was at my own in the past weeks, and surprisingly I am thankful for the perspective it has afforded...

It's in the spirit of making good from bad that I am committing to you and the larger family of South Carolinians to use this experience to both trust God in his larger work of changing me, and from my end, to work to becoming a better and more effective leader."

This ruse didn't help him and he was ousted from office. But when has that stopped a conservative? Now he's trying to win back his old congressional seat, but since it's been gerrymandered, the district is a bit different now. Are the people in Mark Sanford's district this easily duped?

Will the God of Second Chances be kind to him?

He's hoping to ride that wave into a second chance in politics. Three years ago, he went from being rumored as a potential Republican presidential contender to disgraced South Carolina governor, following a highly-publicized affair with an Argentinean woman.

He's now in a run-off election for the Republican nomination for congressional seat in the Palmetto State. If he wins it, he'll face a Democratic opponent that's also familiar with the limelight.

Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert, always dreamed of a career in politics — and now she has a chance to realize that dream.---

Earlier Tuesday, Sanford said it was "a treat and a blessing" to be back on the ballot. He represented the district in Congress for three terms before he was elected governor, serving two terms.

"We all hope for a second chance. I believe in a God of second chances," Sanford said after voting Tuesday.
