The short, terse note that created the short, terse shitstorm.

The fallout from the Agnew resignation the day before was still reverberating all over Capitol Hill. The scramble was on for a replacement and much of the news on this day was consumed with speculation. Attorney General Richardson put out an appeal to put the Agnew case to rest, although it wasn't completely looking that way if the state of Maryland had anything to say about it

The world was spinning wildly out of control in other places on this day. The latest Arab-Israeli War saw Israeli troops heading straight to the outskirts of Damascus, while Syria made claims it downed 94 Israeli jets. In Argentina, Buenos Aires was getting ready to inaugurate Juan "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" Peron amidst a veritable phalanx of some 3,000 Argentine troops guarding the proceedings along with bullet-proof glass installed on the speakers podium said to be able to withstand anything up to and including a tank attack. Would you say Juan wasn't feeling the love? A safe and fuzzy guess.

But there was a brief respite in the all-consuming wackiness of this day. The Oakland A's clinched the American League Pennant to face the New York Mets in the 1973 World Series. At least America's Great National Pastime came to the rescue so this October 11th wasn't a complete wash.

And so reported Douglas Edwards along with Eric Sevareid's Commentary on this installment of The World Tonight from CBS Radio on October 11, 1973.
