During that seismic eruption of talent and creativity known as "the psychedelic period" from 1966-1971, one band stands out as one of the truly great innovators. Soft Machine weren't a big commercial success (as in #1 singles), and aren't terribly well known even by some devotees of the 60's, but they were a major influence on the Progressive scene and were wildly popular in the Underground club scene.
Tonight's track is from 1967 and was recorded by the BBC on December 10th of that year and not issued commercially. Soon, Soon, Soon (or by its alternate title We Know What You Mean) would wind up on the first solo album (Joy Of A Toy) by founding member Kevin Ayers, who left the band in 1968 at the end of their U.S. tour.
A great band who were pioneers in a movement ahead of its time and who continue to be discovered, many years after their breakup.
