It only seems fitting and natural that, after posting Quicksilver Messenger Service last night, we keep it going with another iconic band from the same place and the same period. Jefferson Airplane had it easier than QMS from the get-go, strictly from a mainstream popularity point of view. With a revamped lineup from their first album (Taking Off), that included the introduction of Grace Slick, formerly of The Great Society, on vocals. It was a magic combination with the likes of White Rabbit and Someone To Love racing up the charts, and the stunning good looks of Grace (The Face That Launched A Thousand Trips) Slick, they were well on their way to making history in no time.
Surrealistic Pillow was a "must-have" album for anyone even remotely interested in the Psychedelic genre. It was loaded with highly evocative tunes and was one of the required albums for listening to while getting stoned or getting laid.
Tonight it's one of those required tracks. Comin' Back To Me is a five minute masterpiece of understatement that is both hopeful and melancholy. Strangley, it became something of an anthem when it showed up as the theme music for a radio documentary about teenage runaways produced in 1968.
A little something for everybody, even back in those days.
