I don't think anyone has ever actually tallied up the number of artists who arrived on the scene with lots of promise and talent, released one album or one single and vanished without a trace.
It must number well into the thousands by now.
And it must be said Deena Webster is one of them. A folksinger with a voice in the manner of Sandy Denny, whose one album for Parlophone Records was issued in 1968 and featured primarily covers of other artists (from The Bee Gees to Janis Ian). Was moderately well received, did not sell at all. Stuck around long enough to release a few singles and then quietly dropped out of sight.
Only in the past two or three years has a groundswell of interest sprung up, with copies of her mono-only lp going for stupid amounts of money and people asking who she is and what became of her.
So tonight we're playing a track of her album, a Janis Ian penned track Tangles Of My Mind to give you a taste if you're curious, and an idea if you've heard about her but never heard her.
Another artist you can wonder about what might have been.
One day they'll finish counting.
