The Valu-Jet crash site. After the shock, the mundane act of retrieval.

Not nearly as busy as 1980, but May 18th in 1996 was full of its fair share of drama, horror and perplexity. Starting with news of the aftermath of the Valu-Jet passenger plane crash in the Everglades and the continuing search for black boxes, bodies and answers. Senator Bob Dole delivers an impassioned address upon his resignation from the Senate in order to campaign for the Presidential nomination for the Republican party. Romano Prodi is sworn in as President of Italy. The Whitewater Trial goes into deliberation. The Freemen standoff in Montana continues with negotiations dragging on. Admiral Mike Boorda's suicide raises many questions and finger pointing at the media over his mis-representation of medals and the Tailhook scandal. The FAA comes under criticism from the Valu-Jet disaster. Voice of America icon Willis Conover succumbs after a long battle with Cancer and a half-page of a speech delivered by Abraham Lincoln fetches $500,000 at auction.
