Busy news day, this 8th of March in 1978. The Coal Miners strike was heading into Day 93 with the White House holding closed door sessions on it's resolution. Talk of government intervention was high. Meanwhile, there was dissension in the ranks of the UMW with a threatened ouster of Union President Arnold Miller. On the Middle East Peace talks front. Israeli Defense Officials were meeting with officials at The Pentagon and Prime Minster Begin was readying to meet with President Carter. The Sunday elections in Guatemala were undoing a recount due to massive voter fraud, nullifying the initial results. The Senate was debating the Panama Canal Treaty which was coming up for a vote on the 13th. Energy legislation was being argued back and forth and Hustler Publisher Larry Flynt was listed in critical condition after having just undergone his second surgery for bullet wounds he sustained in an attempted assassination outside a courthouse in Georgia. Police detained a 20 year old Teddy Morris on suspicion of attempted murder but was later released when the accusations later turned out to be a hoax. Although a convicted White Supremacist confessed to the murder attempt many years later, no official charges were ever made. Imagine that. Well yes . . . .actually, you can.
