Approximately 14 protesters were arrested at the main gates of Vandemberg Air Force Base Saturday morning as they engaged in civil disobedience demonstrating against the launch of a Minuiteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. Those arrested included longtime activist Daniel Ellsberg, the man responsible for the leaking the Pentagon Papers in 1971, and Cindy Sheehan who garnered widespread attention in 2005 for her anti-war protest at a makeshift camp outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch.
Activists from the Bay Area all the way to Las Vegas traveled to the 11:55 p.m. protest organized by indigenous Chumash and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in Santa Barbara, CA. The Minuteman III ICBM was launched succesfully at 2:46 a.m. from an underground silo on North Base.
