The Foo Fighters were formed in Seattle in 1994, founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the death of Kurt Cobain. The group got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as foo fighters.
Over the course of the band's career, four of its albums have won 11 Grammy Awards, including "Best Rock Album" four times. The band's seventh studio album, Wasting Light, was released in 2011. Grohl is working overtime in the studio on number eight, according to a recent update on the album's progress.
On September 28th, the Foo Fighters will perform at the second annual Global Citizen Festival. The band also inaugurated the first edition of the Global Citizen Festival in 2012, which took place in front of over 60,000 concertgoers on Central Park's iconic Great Lawn, which will also host this year's event. The Global Citizen Festival was timed to coincide with the meeting of the annual United Nations General Assembly Meeting, which had convened to consider its members' actions and goals on behalf of reducing worldwide poverty – putting pressure on world leaders via a media spotlight while at the same time raising money and awareness for the cause.
Tickets are again free for the Sept. 28 event, but must be earned through acts meant to help end extreme poverty around the world.
