The US military has a plan should they deem it necessary to attack Iran, an official said Sunday.

US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen told NBC's David Gregory that he thinks a strike on Iran is a bad idea but a plan is ready if needed.

"I think the military actions have been on the table and remain on the table and certainly in that regard it's one of the options that the president has," said Mullen "Again, I hope we don't get to that. It's an important option. It's one that's well understood."

"The military has a plan should it come to that?" asked Gregory.

Mullen simply responded, "We do."
