Donald Trump's shoutout to the "late great Hannibal Lecter" is weird on many levels. Since he is still alive, Trump couldn't have meant the actor Anthony Hopkins. And then there's the character, a vicious serial killer who ate his prey. As far as I remember, he didn't die in the films. At his rally in New Jersey last night, Trump paid his respects to Lecter and somehow tied him into issues at the border after praising the fictional character.
"Silence of the Lamb," Trump said. "Has anyone ever seen the Silence of the Lamb?"
"The late great Hannibal Lecter is a wonderful man," the former President said. "He oftentimes would have a friend for dinner. Remember the last scene? Excuse me. I'm about to have a friend for dinner."
"And this poor doctor walks by," he continued. "I'm about to have a friend for dinner."
"But Hannibal Lecter," he added. "Congratulations. The late great Hannibal Lecter. We have people that are being released into our country that we don't want in our country."
.
Make that make sense, please. And then there was this gem:
If President Joe Biden spoke like that, the right-wing media would lose their shit, and Republicans would call for a cognitive test ASAP. What's more unnerving isn't just that Trump is a raving lunatic, but it's that his supporters are OK with that.
I'll leave you with this:
Is anyone else craving a nice Chianti with fava beans? Yikes.
