Watchdog groups have filed complaints against former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis, calling for her disbarment over her illegal efforts to overthrow the presidential election after Trump lost in 2020. In case you're confused as to who Ellis is, Rudy Giuliani gave her Covid (allegedly!) by farting on her in court.
The Messenger reports:
The States United Democracy Center and Lawyers Defending American Democracy sent the 134-page detailed complaint Friday to the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel, a group within the Colorado Supreme Court that overseas the practice of law in the state, the Denver Post was the first to report.
A tearful Ellis pleaded guilty in October in Georgia to a single felony of aiding and abetting false statements and writing concerning the election in the state. The plea was part of a deal with Georgia prosecutors in their sweeping election racketeering case against Trump and 17 other co-defendants.
"If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges," Ellis said in court. "I look back on this whole experience with deep remorse for those failures of mine."
She was sentenced to five years probation and fined $5,000.
The watchdog groups argued that Ellis should lose her law license because she broke her pledge as an attorney to uphold the law.
The complaint also accuses her of not accepting responsibility for her actions in her guilty plea, instead characterizing her "criminal conduct as a mere failure to conduct due diligence."
Via The Hill:
Besides the watchdog groups, other signatories included former Gov. Steve Bullock (D-Mont.), former Gov. Bill Weld (R-Mass.) and multiple former state attorneys general.
“Attorneys barred in Colorado take an oath to ’employ such means as are consistent with truth and honor,'” the letter reads. “As set forth below, through acts undertaken in late 2020, Ms. Ellis violated that oath.”
Ellis was one of 19 individuals who were indicted over allegations of breaking the law in a bid to overthrow the 2020 presidential election result in Georgia. She was forced to crowdfund for her legal defense after former President Donald Trump refused to cover her expenses.
What is the lesson in all of this? Everything Trump touches dies. Just ask Rudy Giuliani about that.
