Former President Donald Trump took the stage in Iowa on Friday night to address an influential gathering of Republicans, and attendees could hear the lyrics of a song, "One could end up going to prison, one just might be president."
The song Only In America by Brooks & Dunn was playing, and I'm sure it was just a coinkydink that it played at the precise moment that Trump walked out.
Special Counsel Jack Smith brought additional charges this week against the twice-indicted former President alleging that he mishandled classified documents from his time in the White House.
GOP Presidential hopeful Will Hurd's words were not received well.
"Donald Trump is not running for president to make American great again," Hurd said. "Donald Trump is not running for President to defend our interests overseas. Donald Trump is not even running to represent the people that voted for him in 2016 and in 2020. Donald Trump is running for President in order for him to stay out of jail."
Hurd is not wrong.
