Every American should celebrate Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Imagine being enslaved without knowing President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed you. That happened to enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, until Major General Gordon Granger proclaimed their freedom in Texas on June 19, 1865. Today is a celebration of freedom -- unless you're a Trump supporter. I wonder why that is.
The President released two tweets to honor the holiday.
This alleged human is misinformed. Robert Byrd repented and spent the rest of his life advocating civil rights. The NAACP mourned his death.
I can't imagine:
It's not a fake holiday.
Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk called Juneteenth "Pagan garbage."
This:
On June 19, 1865, 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, to announce that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. It's not a "fake holiday." Trump supporters might hate the celebration of freedom, and they may hate Black people, but it's an authentic holiday.
Happy Juneteenth, y'all!
