Harry Dunn is an American hero. He protected our Capitol from Trump supporting rioters and insurrectionists on January 6th. He had to deal with racist slurs being thrown at him by so called "Patriots" and "back the blue" bumper sticker wearing Americans. Officer Dunn is a 13-year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police who fought the MAGA mob for hours, deaing with both verbal and physical abuse. In interviews with media outlets, Dunn made it clear that they were prepared to deal with protestors, but they did not expect the violence or hand-to-hand combat they had to engage in. At 6'7", Dunn is an imposing figure. (Note: I had the great pleasure of actually meeting Officer Dunn earlier this week and yes, he is an imposing and strong figure, but he also is a teddy bear with a genuine smile and an incredibly warm demeanor.)
On January 6th, Officer Dunn was engaged in multiple physical encounters. Punches. Pepper spray. He recounts, vividly, seeing rioters pouring in through the doors and windows. Just a shocking sight, and it went on for HOURS. Then he had to deal with the racist slurs....from the same "patriots" who claim to "back the blue." The n-word started flying, of course, because it always does with these people.
One of the most heartbreaking parts of Officer Dunn's interview with the New York Times involved this section:
"The officers who had been fighting from the start, a lot of us just sat down on the floor. There was trash everywhere. The smoke was thick. I saw one of my buddies who I’ve known basically since I’ve been on the department, and we just looked at each other. And we just started talking about the day and how we were hurting. A war is made up of 100 battles. We were all in the war, but we all had different battles. A lot of us Black officers fought a different battle than everybody else fought. I said to my buddy, “I got called [slur] a couple dozen times today.” I’m looking at him. He’s got blood on him. I’ve got bloody knuckles. We’re hurting. That’s when I said, “Is this America?” and I started crying. Tears are coming down my face. “Is this America?”
So, of course, Tucker Carlson just had to attack Officer Dunn, days before he is slated to testify before the January 6th Commission.
Dunn is an angry left-wing political activist whose social media feeds are full of praise, no coincidentally with Nancy Pelosi. Here is a picture of the two of them together. Racism is so American, Harry Dunn wrote in one post, that when you protest it people think you are protesting America. #leaveittowhitesto-tell whites what is racist.
Tuckums, who has never worn a uniform, except maybe a prep school one, mocked a brave law enforcement officer who has protected our country for 13 years and defended our Capitol during the most violent insurrection in a century, or maybe ever. Fox News and Tucker Carlson owe Officer Dunn an apology, It will never come, because that is not what Fox cares about. But they SHOULD.
UPDATE: Dunn's lawyer speaks out about the harassment Dunn has received since Tucker's slanderous rant on Fox News:
1/BREAKING NEWS:
I have been rep'ng @CapitolPolice Ofc #HarryDunn for 5 months & during that time he appeared in many interviews to discuss his #Jan6th experience. Only once did he receive a hostile msg UNTIL @TuckerCarlson's monologue last night. Then things changed.— Mark S. Zaid (@MarkSZaidEsq) July 22, 2021
2/In wake of that rant on @Foxnews, numerous vile/racist msgs have been sent to Ofc Dunn. Many msgs specifically cite Carlson. I've experienced this before. During 1st Trump impeachment when I rep'd IC #whistleblower, death threats didn't arrive until right-wing pundits spoke out
— Mark S. Zaid (@MarkSZaidEsq) July 22, 2021
3/There was clear correlation btwn statements from @TuckerCarlson, @IngrahamAngle, @seanhannity, @marklevinshow & #Limbaugh. After (& during when) they spoke, death threats followed. One person was prosecuted & sentenced to year+ in jail.https://t.co/4HJYq4VRDg

END/If anything happens to Ofc #Dunn, Sgt #Gonell or other officers who testify on Tues (or their families), safe bet "direct" line of responsibility can be pointed to right-wing pundits like @TuckerCarlson. Words matter @FoxNews. Words matter.
