Here's a weird late Monday news dump regarding to the Department of Justice holiday party that was to be held at the Trump Hotel in DC on Sinday. It was cancelled. The Washington Post is reporting that the party was "rescheduled" but the DOJ will not disclose when the party will be rescheduled to. The DOJ spokeswoman said that it would be at the Trump Hotel in DC, but that was all she could say.
The 200-person party would have brought in around $30,000 for Donald Trump personally, so this is some sweet emoluments money that Trump really wants. Who knows if this is related to the ongoing impeachment efforts, the numerous cases the DOJ is defending Trump against (taxes, etc) or if this is related to the (probably forthcoming) Rudy "the mouth" Giuliani's indictment. Or, maybe Bill Barr just sees the writing on the wall and is backing away slowly.
The contract that Barr signed with the Trump hotel "required a minimum of $31,500 in spending." The Washington Post reports that Barr personally put up the $10k deposit. Barr agreed to pay for the party himself, to avoid the whole emoluments thing.
It is possible that the party was moved to avoid protests. On Sunday, when the party was initially scheduled, a handful of protestors allegedly showed up, calling for Barr to be "disbarred".
Barr is still 100% MAGA all the way, so the chances of this being some sort of epiphany that maybe Trump is a criminal grifter who Barr should stop defending is slim. More likely he is scared of throwing a party where he will have to face protestors.
Snowflake.
