The question has to be asked: What the hell has happened to The New York Times?
It's not a new phenomena, by any stretch. Some of my first articles here at C&L were castigating Judy Miller's stenography for Dick Cheney in the run up to the Iraq invasion and occupation.
But seriously, this is something that isn't even close to subtle.
On Sunday, The New York Times Politics Editor posted this on Twitter:
Let's be clear: MOST AMERICANS do not approve of Donald Trump. Trump enjoys a strong approval level by Republicans, but that indicates more about the intensely tribalistic aspect of our partisan divide more than anything else, and really, we're only talking about roughly 20 percent of the American populace.
So reaching out for yet another feature about understanding the Trump voter, and framing it as a story about how meanly others must be treating those poor, misunderstood supporters has just leapt over the abyss from journalism to public relations. Especially when you consider how few articles actually offer any other perspective from the left at all.
