After lying his way into yet another storm of criticism, Donald Trump has assigned Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to clean up his mess on Aisle Green Beret, and specifically with regard to the widow of La David Johnson, who was deeply wounded by his comments made during a condolence call yesterday.
When asked during today's press briefing whether Trump was denying that he ever said the words "he knew what he signed up for" to Johnson's grieving widow or whether she took what he said the wrong way, Huckabee Sanders leapt to his defense. Sort of.
"[M]ultiple people in the room believe that the president was completely respectful, very sympathetic, and expressed condolences for himself and the rest of the country, and thanked the family for their service, commended them for having an American hero in their family, and I don't know how you can take that any other way," she hedged.
Noting the absence of a denial about what he actually said, the reporter tried to clarify. "And he didn't say those words. It was the context. He felt that she put it in the wrong context. Is that it?"
Wow, it's almost like that reporter handed Sanders a nice clean roll of paper towels to clean up the word vomit on the floor, but she was having none of it.
I'm not getting into the back and forth," she huffed. "I think the sentiment of the president was very clear. He took the time to make a call, express condolences and thank the family for this individual's service, and I think it, frankly, is a disgrace of the media to try to portray an act of -- kindness like that, and that gesture, try to make it into something that it isn't."
So, then. No denial of the actual things Trump said. A claim that all things were said respectfully, however.
I can respectfully tell Sarah Huckabee Sanders I think she is a spawn of Satan who will live in the ninth circle of hell for eternity as a consequence of her toadying for Trump, too. I can have a deferential tone, and of course preface my remarks by saying "with all due respect."
I somehow doubt it would offend her less.
The problem here is that Trump lacks any empathy at all, and he is a racist. Does anyone think it's a surprise that the one he's having the problem with is the only African-American of the four killed?
He does not think of Johnson's widow the same way he thinks of the other widows. And it showed.
He's also a compulsive liar...and Sarah is his enabler.
