Samantha Bee led off her show tonight by looking at the horrendous, shameful, unprecedented power grab in North Carolina.
As always, she got it right.
"I mean, sure, it's a little odd that before signing any new law, Governor Cooper will be required to get a transvaginal ultrasound but that's just so he can hear the bill's heartbeat."
As an aside, any bills put forward by the Republican legislature will have no heart, and therefore no discernable heartbeat. It's a feature, not a bug.
She also landed a blow on North Carolina GOP director Dallas Woodhouse, who has a twin brother who is a Democratic organizer.
But here's the real takeaway, and it isn't for Republicans.
"The states truly are laboratories of democracy in that some of them are working hard to cure democracy like it's a virus. That is what happens when we don't read local news because it's not in our Facebook feed," she said, taking a swipe at all of us who stay glued to our phones instead of paying attention to the more local concerns around us right here.
"While democrats are busy signing petitions and frantically googling the word, 'emoluments,' savvy Republicans get elected to the state house, shut the door and go hog [beep] wild. until one day you wake up and wonder, hey, where did the Planned Parenthood go? And why is my tap water so thick?"
"If you're looking for a place to put your energy, stop trying to overturn a national election and start working on a local election. They matter. This guy won by just 10,000 votes."
Yep. If we want to win, we've got to go local. And more importantly, keep the truth in front of us while shutting out the noise.
