This is how insane this election has become. John McCain, in his zeal to save the Senate from evil Democrats, said that Pat Toomey needs to be re-elected so they can block Clinton Supreme Court nominees.

Or maybe he didn't, depending.

Initial reports say oh, yes, he will.

Speaking on behalf of Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, who is losing badly, McCain, who is pretty safely ahead in his own race, told a talk radio host in Philadelphia that Senate Republicans would mount an unprecedented campaign of obstruction against Hillary Clinton’s Supreme Court nominees.

“I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up,” McCain said. “I promise you. This is where we need the majority and Pat Toomey is probably as articulate and effective on the floor of the Senate as anyone I have encountered.”

But after a flurry of WTFness on social media, there seems to have been a bit of a walkback.

"Senator McCain believes you can only judge people by their record and Hillary Clinton has a clear record of supporting liberal judicial nominees,” McCain spokesman Rachael Dean told TPM in a statement. “That being said, Senator McCain will, of course, thoroughly examine the record of any Supreme Court nominee put before the Senate and vote for or against that individual based on their qualifications as he has done throughout his career."

You take that statement any way you see fit. But to me, it says two things.

First, that Republicans plan to continue their campaign of obstruction and gridlock, no matter whether they have the majority or not.

Second, that all Republicans campaigning right now have absolutely no regret about saying whatever they think they need to say in whatever area of the country they are in if they think it will get them votes.

After all, Cokie's Law is in effect here. It's out there, right? McCain can spin it for the national stage, but those Pennsylvania listeners heard what he said, and that's what will influence them.

There's only one antidote. Deliver a huge landslide that not only sweeps Clinton into office, but Democratic Senators and Representatives to Congress. Let's not forget the first two years Obama was in office when he had majorities. Things got done, despite the dysfunction of one of our parties. It's time to do that again.
