During the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, Kellyanne Conway ran a Super PAC that supported Ted Cruz called, Keep the Promise I, and back in April she told CNN's Don Lemon that Trump needed to release his tax returns for the sake of transparency.

Lemon asked, "I want to ask you about the alliance between you first, Kellyanne, between John Kasich and Ted Cruz, this alliance, shall we say, that Donald trump is calling collusion. Is this fair game?"

Conway replied, "Of course it's fair games Are they playing by the rules? It's completely transparent. Donald Trump's tax returns aren't. I would like to see those be transparent."

On CNN's SOTU this morning, host Dana Bash followed up with her and asked Conway when Trump will release his tax returns since she's now Donald Trump's campaign manager.

Bash asked, "Now you're in charge of his campaign. given that, given how you feel, will we see his tax returns soon?

Conway surprisingly replied, " Now that I am on the inside I know something I didn't know then which is he is under audit. He has said clearly and I back him up completely, that when the audit is completed he'll release the tax returns.

If VP Joe Biden was commenting on her response, he'd say that was a bunch of malarkey!

In February, months before Kellyanne made her transparency statement to Don Lemon, the IRS said Donald can show us his returns.

In a statement Friday, the IRS said that federal privacy rules prohibit the agency from discussing individual tax matters, but “nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax information.”

And he's since been very vocal about not releasing them until his audit was over. This wasn't something that was kept internal by the campaign, but was repeatedly vocalized to the press and public. Why is Kellyanne making believe this is new information to her?

And we know that whole defense is a canard for another reason. He could release years of his tax returns prior to the audit.

Even Greta Van Susteren, who is a Trump fan asked, "would you give up or surrender, or let the media see your tax returns, at least for the years not currently in audit."

Dana Bash then asked, "According to his lawyers, the years 2002 to 2008 are no longer under audit. so would you release those tax returns?

Conway refused that also saying, "This entire tax return debate is somewhat confounding to me, in the following sense: I don't think that it creates one job, gets one more individual who does not have health insurance covered by health insurance..."

This is also a totally bogus response.

Conway knows how presidential campaigns are run, she's been part of the Republican establishment for many years. it's not confounding to her, but her answer is confounding to all of us.

Dana Bash didn't bother with follow up questions which was unfortunate, but let's hope the rest of the media will use her faulty words today as a starting point and not let her off the hook.

Here's a few examples. 'Kellyanne, you already knew Trump had said he was being audited and yet you still demanded transparency?'

'This has been a tradition for forty years and the American people expect to see all presidential candidates tax returns. Is Trump above the American people's need for information?

'This has nothing to do with President Obama or Hillary Clinton since they've both released their tax returns - please stop changing the subject.'
