Tamron Hall was tasked with broadcasting in the sticky, hot MSNBC media area outside the DNC in Philadelphia. The interview even concluded with a discussion of the humid and hot climate, and the guest was surprised that they set up shop outside in such discomfort.
Hall interviewed Trevor Noah, the new host of The Daily Show and they discussed this DNC versus last week's craptacular necropolis of the Republican Party, the RNC in Cleveland.
Noah, who's had the impossible task of filling some big shoes after Jon Stewart retired from The Daily Show, is an émigré from South Africa and has never had the pleasure of covering an American Presidential Election. This is not the election to start with if you're trying to break someone in gently.
Noah has been a harsh critic of Trump, simply based on the words and actions of Trump himself, which makes his opinions even more poignant. Noah definitely has fewer preconceived notions than those of us who grew up here with his incessant attention-whoring.
HALL: How do you make sense of, from your perspective of what's happening in our country?
NOAH: I think that's the biggest mistake is that we're still trying to make sense of something that is complete buffoonery...We have gotten to the point in the campaign where, unfortunately there is somebody who is a clown, who's a dangerous clown, but he's managed to ramp up the rhetoric.
Noah is genuinely surprised that the GOP Clown Car primary culminated with Drümpenfüher as the victor. He is amazed that so many Republicans abandoned their principles and didn't 'step away' from the Orange Hellbeast and fell in line with this unimaginably awful excuse for a candidate.
They banter over our two-party system, Noah making some good points. He elaborates on how severely compartmentalizing it is for such a broad spectrum of political leanings in the USA to only have two outlets. It's incredibly divisive and ridiculous, at times. If there ever was a year for a third party to emerge, this would be it, he argued. He then explained what the rest of the world thinks of the possibility of a President Donald:
NOAH: I'm speaking as somebody that comes from another country and have lived in many different places in the world. Donald Trump is a frightening thing to the world. This is not even about American politics anymore, this is about the world.
Tamron compares the xenophobic Trump-esque virus that seemed to spread to the UK in the form of Brexit. Noah differentiates that situation with the Trump-faithful with the assumption that English citizens wouldn't want to disband NATO and embrace Putin. For the sake of the British, we all certainly hope so.
America (cough, cough the media) has helped Trump, as has the GOP, Noah believes. The groundwork was laid out for him, and this was an easy ascent to maniacal power.
Hall finally asked if last September when he began to host The Daily Show, he could have fathomed such a sh*t show as this election. Of course, he couldn't, he said. Who could have? I'd say, even the greatest fiction writer on the planet could not have contrived such a frightening potential catastrophe as the Drümpenfüher having a crack at being POTUS.
