It was on this day in 1940 when Billboard magazine published its first comprehensive record chart. Previously they published best-seller lists submitted by the individual record companies. The new chart compiled the top sellers from all major labels and ranked them accordingly. The first number one song on that chart? "I'll Never Smile Again" The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra. The song, written by Ruth Lowe, launched ol' blue eyes career.
