Last week, Chris Matthews put Jeff Weaver in a bit of a bind when he got Weaver to go on about how wrong it was for Trump not to release his tax returns. Matthews then asked Weaver why Bernie Sanders hasn't released his.
It was a trap, and Weaver walked right into it, ending the conversation by saying he would give Matthews a concrete date for when Sanders would release his returns.
But today, the tables got turned, when Matthews brought up the subject again. This time, Weaver was ready, for him, pointing out that Chris Matthews' wife, Kathleen, did not release her tax returns while running for the U.S. Congress.
Kathleen Matthews lost the primary.
I'm not sure if candidates for the United States House of Representatives are subject to the same scrutiny as Presidential candidates or not. The parry was an effective one if only to deflect the topic away from Sanders and onto Matthews.
I've hesitated to hammer on the tax return issue because I can make the argument that tax returns shouldn't have to be released until the nomination is won. Why would anyone lay their personal finances bare like that voluntarily? By the same token, I don't see where Kathleen Matthews is particularly relevant to the conversation about Sanders' tax returns, too.
It really just feels like a bit of a pissing contest all around.
