Writing this as an autism parent and also a resident of Illinois, where our hedgefunding Republican governor cut autism funding on World Autism Day last year.
When you talk to parents of kids with autism, you find out that sure, there are tragedies and challenges involved, but there is also joy and celebration and a firm determination to be a voice where often there is none, and to help our children succeed just as they are. Most of all, people with autism need a supportive society in which to blossom. Creating that takes commitment, activism, funding, and awareness. Happy Autism Awareness Month.
The photo above is from a terrific collection of autism parents and teachers' tattoos. Worth the click.
Full disclosure: My 17 year old is high functioning and voted in the Illinois primary for the first time this year. His career goal is to be a politician and help the middle class. :D
