Nothing at Crooks and Liars should be interpreted to promote a McDonald's diet or 'lifestyle.' That said, it's heartening to see the mega-fast food chain pushing social norms in a culture as resistant to change as we are.
The ad above does not have English subtitles, but here is the report of what it says. The ad shows a father and son drinking McCafe beverages, which feature on their cups a blank space to write something you want to say. The son has written "I like boys." After the father sighs angrily and walks away, he returns and edits his son's cup to read "I accept that you like boys." Smiles through the tears ensue.
Coming out as gay is not always so pleasant in Taiwan, which is nevertheless one of the most gay-friendly regions in southeast Asia.
And of course, there are "Christian" groups calling for a boycott. The Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family has a charter that "opposes all advertising that miseducate children on sexual behavior,’ and ‘rebukes and boycotts all enterprises that are polluting the next generation."
Think of the children? It seems this ad already does that.
The English language website Shanghaiist reports:
President-elect Tsai Ing-wen has been on the record as saying she supports marriage equality. In a campaign video released before she led her party to a landslide victory in elections in January, she said, "In the face of love, everyone is equal. Let everyone have the freedom to love and to pursue their happiness."
