Though known as a guitar player Dan Hicks big break in music came as a drummer in 1965 when he joined the influential San Francisco psychedelic rock band the Charlatans. After his connection with the band fractured in 1967, he formed his first incarnation of his own band the Hot Licks.

Anchored by Dan's guitar style, which was influenced from the early jazz and folk sounds of the 1920s and the "hot rhythm" blues and swing of the 1940s, the Hot Licks had a long and vast career that continued to entertain fans into 2013.

In 2014, Dan was diagnosed with throat and liver cancer. On February 6, 2016, those cancers claimed his life.
