With his own eligibility to run for President under attack, Ted Cruz has gone on the offensive, taking on the children of undocumented immigrants who are benefiting from DACA, the President's executive order protecting them from deportation.
This young lady asked him about her own status if he's elected. "What's going to happen to people like us?," she asked.
As Rep. Steve King stood beside Cruz nodding, he answered her. "Well listen, I would note that if you're a DACA recipient it means that you were brought here illegally, and violating the laws have consequences."
(Even though she was a child with no choice but to go with her parents where they went.)
Cruz went on to explain that our broken immigration system creates human tragedies, and this is one, but never mind all that, because it's imperative to compound the error.
He then flipped the scenario to one where if an American emigrated illegally to Germany, or Spain or Mexico or other countries, they would be deported.
He just forgot one part of that. The laws concerning immigration to other countries are far more lenient than the laws here, for the most part.
For me, the most chilling part of Cruz' answer was the cold-eyed stare he gave while delivering it. He would have absolutely no problem denying these people residence (much less citizenship!) in the United States, in spite of the fact that his father was a beneficiary of United States largesse.
It's sick.
