Anyone who was being an objective viewer during Sarah Palin's endorsement speech of Donald Trump last night would admit that it was a bizarre display by the former VP candidate. She rambled on at a lightening pace for about twenty minutes, barely coming up for oxygen in what would best be described as a word salad array of Palinesque conservative beat poetry.
When you read the transcript, it's very strange, but it doesn't come close to representing her performance. It was as if she mainlined a triple shot of espresso and chased it back with a couple of bottles of 5 Hour Energy drinks right before she stepped onto the stage. You really have to watch her to understand what I'm saying.
But if you tuned into CNN's coverage of the announcement, hosted by Erin Burnett and Gloria Borger, you would have been told that she was marvelous, riveting and "at her best."
ERIN BURNETT, CNN ANCHOR: All right. You just heard Sarah Palin giving her endorsement for Donald Trump. That was a pretty riveting speech. I don't think anyone could say otherwise. Zinger after zinger, one liner after one liner. That was something else to watch. That was something that Donald Trump is hoping turn the tide for him in the state of Iowa where she is so popular to evangelicals. You just heard her bring in his faith in the almighty among many other things that are red meat to those evangelical voters.
I guess you could say Palin delivered a riveting speech in the same way we slow down to view accidents on the freeway. Why are they so afraid to be honest about Palin's performance? There were conservatives who were equally bemused by her antics. Here's Glenn Beck:
“Maybe the press was right about her but for all of the wrong reasons,”
Here's Gloria Borger's crack analysis.
GLORIA BORGER, CNN CHIEF POLITICAL ANALYST: Right. And it was kind of deja vu all over again if you recall Sarah Palin's speech at the McCain convention where she was riveting. I think this time she did two things. It was kind of an ode to Donald Trump for those evangelicals here talking about and for conservatives who might have questions about Trump say, verses Ted Cruz and it was a complete dis of the Republican establishment and that is always attractive to Republican based voters. Particularly, Iowa caucus goers. She said the establishment has been so busted as she put it and that Donald Trump is going to take on the establishment to talk about the dopes in Washington.
She gave a little shout out to Rand Paul. She reminded people in Iowa that Donald Trump may be rich but he's not an elitist. He is on your side. So, she checked every box she had to check.
Borger agreed and compared it to McCain's convention speech that made the media go ga-ga, but it wasn't close to anything like that. After about seven minutes, Palin's speech became quite embarrassing for herself and for Trump.
This morning MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell gave a far more honest answer about the speech:
Mitchell: I don't know, you were in the room yesterday with the two of them, it seemed flat..
Tor: It was...Mitchell: It didn't seem as exciting as some would have thought. And we all should point out that Sarah Palin today, is not the Sarah Palin of 2008. She's had a lot of problems since then.
Tor: That's exactly right.....She doesn't have the same luster she used to have.
Musician Dave Navarro was pretty funny on twitter as he live-tweeted her speech.
