Sadly as anyone who had turned on their television the last few days following this terrorist attack in Paris is already aware of, politicians on the right and their enablers in the media have decided to demagogue this thing for every single ounce of political gain they believe they can get out of it.
Trump is out there calling to step up the surveillance on mosques. We've got these idiot governors out there pretending they can refuse to accept any Syrian refugees coming into the United States.
Thankfully, this Monday, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore gave their viewers a dose of sanity in the middle of all this madness during their panel discussion with The Daily Beast's John Avlon, The Fault in Our Stars author John Green, and SiriusXM's Dean Obeidallah.
I'm not so sure about John Avlon's assertion that in the end the reaction to this week's events are going to show that the demagogues on the right aren't up to the job. Someone show me where there's a dime's worth of difference in the way that Trump reacted to the attacks and what we heard from Jeb Bush? I haven't seen a single one of them that hasn't jumped on the bandwagon and demagogued this, and decided that bashing Syrian immigrants and fearmongering and telling everyone they're coming here to kill us all isn't a great way to score political points.
Other than that, the conversation was a refreshing one and a nice break from the insanity we're being treated to on most of our corporate "news" channels.
Green slammed his "embarrassment" of a governor, Mike Pence for saying that Indiana is going to refuse to take any refugees, when it's not up to him. Obeidallah pointed out the fact that we've had 2000 Syrian refugees here and no acts of violence from them, but in the mean time we've had plenty of white men out there terrorizing the rest of us and committing mass killings. And as Green pointed out, no one's ever asked him to apologize for being a white male immediately following one of those incidents.
After some further discussion about just how truly shameful it's been watching those on the right demonize these refugees who have suffered to badly already, and Avlon pointing out that accepting them here would be one way to defeat the terrorists, rather than playing into their hands, Wilmore wrapped things up with this.
WILMORE: It's times like this we can't try to follow with fear. We have to lead with resolve and stand by all of our values.
Don't expect anyone on the right who is using this for political gain to hear that message any time soon.
