Though he has released over 20 albums over four decades under his own name, if you mention Texas born Guy Clark to the average music fan they may not be familiar with him. You mention his name to a fan of the classic outlaw and “progressive” country movement though they'll likely know his name and will rattle off song of their favorites tunes he's written.
His songs have been recorded by artists ranging from Johnny Cash to Lyle Lovett and Brad Paisley to Steve Earle. When once asked in an interview about who his favorite songwriters are Bob Dylan listed Guy at the top part of his list.
Clark’s calling card though will probably always be “Desperados Waiting For A Train”, which is what we’re going to listen to tonight, that the world first heard as a version done by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1973. Guy’s version didn’t actually appear until his first album, 1975's Old No. 1.
Guy Clark turns 74 years old today. Happy birthday to an old troubadour.
